Manchester United: Ralf Rangnick releases Jesse Lingard after missed transfer

Expiring contract

The situation of midfielder Jesse Lingard at Manchester United continues to be difficult after the end of the winter trans window: Despite several offers, the 29-year-old was not able to make a move until January 31st. On Thursday, “Red Devils” coach Ralf Rangnick announced that the offensive power had been released for a few days and had not been included in the squad for the upcoming FA Cup match against Middlesbrough.

In addition, the manager listed the reasons that nullified a Lingard deal in the past transfer period.

“Jesse has asked to have a few days off to clear his head,” Rangnick said at a club press conference (quoted via “The Athletic“). The 63-year-old expects the player to return to training next Monday. When asked why a transfer of the offensive player who was willing to change failed, the coach explained: “Two things: First, we had a problem with Mason Greenwood and the current absence of a player. Secondly, the club couldn’t find an agreement with another club.”

Lingard, whose contract in Manchester expires at the end of the season, was reportedly being courted by Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur, with the latter only considering a free transfer. The “Magpies”, meanwhile, were willing to go on loan and, in this case, to pay the €2 million fee requested by Man United plus the player’s salary of €96,000 per week.

However, a deal did not come about, apparently also due to the Greenwood personality mentioned by Rangnick, who had recently been banned from the squad indefinitely.

It remains to be seen whether Lingard’s sporting situation at United will improve again in the coming weeks and months after his short break. This season he has made 14 short appearances for 273 of a possible 1,260 minutes – not enough given the fact that, after not being nominated for the 2020 European Championship, he now wants to recommend himself in 2022 with corresponding performances for the World Cup in Qatar.

Lingard had had even less playing time with the “Red Devils” in the first half of the 2020/21 season, which is why he decided to go on loan to West Ham in the winter – who Manchester agreed. This was successful for the player: Lingard was immediately part of the starting eleven for the “Hammers” and contributed nine goals and five assists in 16 games in the league.

With a market value of 20 million euros, the 32-time England international is currently the sixth most valuable midfielder worldwide with a contract ending in the summer.
