6-goal spectacle at Everton

Despite catching up, Manchester City failed in the fight for the championship. The second-placed team in the Premier League drew 3-3 (1-0) away from Everton FC and is now five points behind the leaders Arsenal FC from London, who beat Fulham FC 3-0 on this matchday. Everton can still dream of taking part in the European Cup.
First, Pep Guardiola’s team took the lead thanks to a remarkable goal from Belgian international Jérémy Doku (43′). But the hosts, with former Freiburg player Merlin Röhl in the starting line-up, held out. They made things difficult for the favorites from Manchester for long stretches and rewarded themselves with three goals between the 68th and 81st minutes after the break. In the 1-1 draw, substitute Thierno Barry benefited from a bad pass from City defender Marc Guéhi. Just five minutes later, Jake O’Brien turned the game around and Barry added the third goal. But the lead wasn’t enough for Everton: in a hectic final phase, Manchester managed to equalize through Erling Haaland (83′) and Doku again.
“In the first half we were strong and outstanding, but in the second half they improved. We played well, but perhaps not with the same determination as in the first half,” said Guardiola, analyzing his team’s failures after the game. If you take the lead “and get the upper hand, given the situation and the remaining games, you have to win the game,” continued the visibly disappointed coach.
Guardiola, who has been in second place with his team since matchday 13 and suffered their last league defeat in the derby against Manchester United in mid-January, was confident despite the setback in the title fight. “Before this game we had it in our own hands, but not anymore. We’re preparing for Brentford. We’ll carry on and see what happens.” The Bees will be followed by Bournemouth and Aston Villa for City in the season finale.
