A 25-year-old man from Wijk and Aalburg has been convicted on appeal by the court in Den Bosch for committing violence against Mobile Unit (ME). The man did this during the New Year’s Eve of 2024 to 2025 in Veen. The suspect was part of a group of about 50 people who threw fireworks and bottles at police. He himself threw a beer bottle in the direction of the riot police.

The court imposed a suspended prison sentence of two months, with a probationary period of three years. He was also sentenced to 150 hours of community service. This replaces the previous sentence of the police judge, who imposed a community service order of 120 hours.

According to the court, the suspect consciously chose to participate in the group that adopted an aggressive attitude towards the riot police. “His presence and actions contributed to the escalation of the violence.”

The court saw no reason to impose additional freedom-restricting measures, because the municipality had already imposed an area ban and an order subject to penalty.
