Man drives scooter onto football field, club regrets setting off fireworks

VV Veenhuizen regrets the incident last weekend in which a man drove onto the field on his scooter. The club’s neighbor came to get a story after a ‘well-intentioned’ atmosphere action with bang fireworks.

Thousands of people have seen online the images of the Veenhuizen-Vitesse’63 match, a cellar squatter in Saturday’s third division D. At 0-0, the match is halted after a scooter enters the field. The driver is angry, his horses are stampeded by the bang before the game.

The neighbor informs RTV Drenthe that he was very shocked by the fireworks on Saturday afternoon. “My daughter has fallen off a horse before, requiring an air ambulance to arrive at the scene of the accident. Because the horses were now shocked by the fireworks, my emotions came up.”

“We deeply regret it. It was a well-intentioned atmosphere action and never intended to make people angry, let alone frighten animals,” says Kees van de Leest, chairman of Veenhuizen.

“It was a well-intentioned action to encourage the first team. The first team has dropped somewhat and is fourth last and played against the number last,” explains the chairman. In the past, flares with blue and white smoke were used for this, the club colours. “Torches don’t make any noise. They couldn’t get them now and then they chose this.”

Not a happy choice, as the scooter incident quickly makes clear. “I also spoke to the youth in question right away, they were also shocked. They had never thought about horses running there,” says Van de Leest, who says that bang fireworks will be banned.
