Mamadou Sakho leaves Montpellier after a dispute with coach Der Zakarian

After an argument with Coach Der Zakarian

After two years and 49 competitive games, Mamadou Sakho’s Montpellier chapter is over. Both the 33-year-old defender and the club announced their separation on Thursday. The joint contract was terminated, which resolved the physical dispute between the former PSG talent and ex-Liverpool player with coach Michel Der Zakarian.

“You have to know how to leave the table when respect is no longer being served,” Sakho wrote in a statement shared on social media. He would like to thank his previous teammates, sports director Bruno Carotti, president Laurent Nicollin, the fans and even the medical department. He didn’t say a word about coach Der Zakarian. Sakho is said to have hit him with a broom a little over a week ago.

HSC Montpellier emphasized in its statement that Sakho was suspended after the dispute but not fired. The club’s management had initiated an internal investigation, as they explained shortly after the incident, also in order to speak to the eyewitnesses present and find out the background. Before Sakho’s attack, Der Zakarian is said to have called him “crybaby”.

Montpellier brought Sakho back to his French homeland in 2021 after eight years in England. Still a regular in 2021/22, his playing time has gradually declined since then – from 2,578 Ligue 1 minutes in the first year to just 761 in the second to six in this one.
