Maldini: Hernández ahead of AC Milan extension – squad ‘deep enough’ for championship fight

Most Valuable Rossoneri Professional

With 2,113 minutes, no other professional has played longer at AC Milan this season than Theo Hernández. The left-back is also currently the Rossoneri’s top assist provider with seven assists. In recognition of his achievements, the 24-year-old can expect an extension beyond 2024, as Technical Director Paolo Maldini explained on Sunday evening at “DAZN” (quoted via “Sky Italia“). “With Theo we are really close to renewal, we are in the final stages. We will be meeting with his advisor in the next few days.”

The four-time French national player came to AC from Real Madrid in 2019 for a transfer fee of 21.5 million euros, Milan has never paid more in its club history for a left-back and quickly established himself as a regular. Since his move, he has been one of the top 3 most-used players in his team every season. During that time, his market value climbed from €18m to €48m, making him the shared most valuable professional in the Milan squad.

After Kjaer & Tomori injuries: Maldini bets on depth of Milan squad

While AC Milan is the second-best offensive player in Serie A with 47 goals scored, the defense occasionally wobbles. Despite injuries to defender Simon Kjaer (32; cruciate ligament) and Fikayo Tomori (24), there will be no top-class reinforcements in the winter transfer phase. “We have a squad that is deep enough to be able to fight for the top spots even without newcomers,” said the 53-year-old. Milan are third after matchday 23.

Alessio Romagnoli (27; Corona) and Davide Calabria (25; calf injury and Corona) are back, and Tomori will be available again “in about 20 days” after his knee surgery. “The state of emergency is coming to an end,” said Maldini, emphasizing that even a new player would need time to get used to it. Therefore, you rely on the recovery of your own staff. “If we had had the opportunity to sign a player for the next seven to eight years, it would have been different, but unfortunately it wasn’t possible.” Most recently, central defenders Attila Szalai (24) and Sven Botman (22) been linked to the Rossoneri (to the TM rumor mill).
