Mainz 05: World Cup participant Edimilson Fernandes extends contract

FSV Mainz 05 has extended the expiring contract with Edimilson Fernandes. Immediately before the game against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, the signing of a new working paper dated 2026 was announced. After Murat Yakin’s nomination for the Swiss World Cup squad, this is the second piece of good news for the defender within a week.

“Edimilson Fernandes is a wonderful example of how, as a player, you can come back stronger from periods when things aren’t going well for you and you have to cope with a lot of setbacks. He has shown great performances in the Bundesliga in recent months and has played his way back into the Swiss national team. We are very pleased that we will have Edimilson’s footballing qualities, but also his cheerfulness and esprit with us in the next four years,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt.

Fernandes was unseeded at the start of the season and started just once in the first eight games. Since then he has been indispensable and still jumped on the World Cup train. “I am very happy about my contract extension in Mainz. Especially after the course of the last few years, I’m glad that the coach once again placed his trust in me and that I was able to recommend myself again. It is also thanks to Bo Svensson that I am part of the Swiss national team squad in Qatar. At the end of the day you want to be on the pitch and play. For this reason, the contract extension before the World Cup was the only logical and best decision for me,” he said.
