Mainz 05: Jonathan Burkardt back in training after a year

Possible comeback still open

Jonathan Burkardt, who has been injured for a long time, completed part of the team training at Mainz 05 for the first time. Coach Jan Siewert said this at the FSV press conference on Thursday before the basement duel on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky) at SV Darmstadt 98. He did not want to commit to a comeback plan for the 2021 U21 European champions.

“First of all, I’m happy that he’s back on the field, that he can train now, can train well,” explained Siewert. “If you saw the joy the boy radiated yesterday, then we are just positive that it will continue like this.”

Burkardt missed a year due to bone marrow edema in his left knee and underwent two operations. The 23-year-old played his last game to date on November 13, 2022 in the derby against Eintracht Frankfurt. According to Siewert, offensive talent Brajan Gruda (19) will return to team training this Thursday after his foot injury.
