Mainz 05 before the signing of Anwar El Ghazi – Nelson Weiper is out

Heidel strengthens Svensson

After a weak start to the season with only three goals in four games, Bundesliga bottom team 1. FSV Mainz 05 wants to step up their attack. Anwar El Ghazi, recently linked to Manchester United, is, according to information from “Skybefore signing with the “Zero Fives”. On September 1st, the 28-year-old terminated his contract with PSV Eindhoven, which was originally valid until 2025. The reason: Too little chance of playing time. Since then, El Ghazi has been one of the most valuable clubless professionals.

A commitment by El Ghazi would increase the options in the Mainz offensive after talented striker Nelson Weiper (18) is unavailable. As the FSV confirmed on Thursday, the U21 national player underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee after persistent complaints since the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt (1-1). Weiper, who is supposed to begin rehabilitation measures immediately, is therefore “not available at the moment”.

Bo Svensson was also asked about the possible new signing El Ghazi at the press conference on Thursday. “The name says something to me. He is one of the players who is currently without a contract. There aren’t that many of them that are interesting. I know them all,” said the FSV coach. “We’re dealing with that. We have to see what’s possible.”

Heidel and Mainz crisis: “Nobody has to formulate a headline”

Despite the weak start to the season, sports director Christian Heidel believes that “no one needs to make the Mainz coach an issue”. “Bo Svensson has been doing a great job for two and a half years, saved us from 99 percent certain relegation two years ago and then almost brought us to Europe twice,” said the 60-year-old in an interview with the “VRM Group” newspapers. The “Zero Fives” have been without a win in nine Bundesliga games across the season.

Svensson “feels Mainz and Mainz 05. Now we’re going to do this thing together. End of announcement,” continued Heidel. “Nobody needs to formulate a headline that we would now support the coach. That’s not necessary because it’s the case anyway.” In Mainz, every cog has to fit into the other so that the club has a chance of having a very good season: “If that’s not the case, it can “It happens that we end up at the bottom like we are now.”

Heidel referred to bad luck with injuries and unfortunate games in the previous round, but also said: “We didn’t play well. You just have to say that clearly. I’m deliberately leaving out the 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.”
