The Danish shipping and logistics group Maersk wants to expand its location in Hamburg and create new jobs.
“The music plays in Hamburg when it comes to the logistics of the future and maritime issues, especially for Northern Europe,” said regional boss Ole Trumpfheller to “Welt am Sonntag”. At Maersk he is responsible for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Benelux countries and Poland.
“There are currently around 1,200 employees working for Maersk here at Johann Kontor.” This also included many employees of companies that Maersk has taken over over the years, such as Hamburg Süd or Senator International. “This number is expected to increase significantly. Also in the North European Continent region overall, for which I am responsible and where we currently have around 3,500 employees.”
Maersk manager: Improve road connectivity
Hamburg serves as the so-called head office for the North European continent region. According to Trumpfheller, it is Maersk’s third largest business region overall. When looking at Hamburg, you shouldn’t just look at the envelopes on the quay edges. “Hamburg is already a logistics location of global standing beyond the inner harbor, for example due to the excellent rail connections to the terminals, but also due to numerous logistics companies in the surrounding area.”
There are still many bottlenecks when it comes to road connections. “That should be better. And of course a successor structure to the Köhlbrand Bridge must be available at some point.”
Trumpfheller is calm about the fact that its competitor MSC recently acquired a 49.9 percent stake in the city’s Hamburg port logistics company HHLA. “This is a completely normal development for Maersk. MSC will behave in a competitively neutral manner at the terminals in Hamburg as it does everywhere else in the world and of course as APMT, our subsidiary, does at its terminals.” MSC shows how important Hamburg is as a location.
