TEL AVIV (dpa-AFX) – After the overthrow of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad, Israel is confronted with another front on the Golan Heights in Syria. “Since yesterday evening we have been engaged in combat operations on four fronts. The ground troops are fighting on four fronts: against terrorism in Judea and Samaria, in the Gaza Strip, in Lebanon, and last night we moved troops into Syrian territory,” said Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi Recruits. Judea and Samaria are the Israeli names for the occupied West Bank. However, Israel stressed that the army would not interfere in the internal events in Syria.

Israel had previously moved its forces to the buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights as rebels took control of Syria. Troops have been positioned “in the buffer zone and several other locations necessary for defense,” including on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon. “We will not allow any hostile force to position itself on our border,” emphasized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. At the same time, he reiterated that Israel was interested in “good neighbors” with Syria./ro/DP/he
