PARIS (dpa-AFX) – French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed to his Iranian colleague Massoud Peseschkian that attacks on countries in the region must stop immediately. “I called on him to immediately stop the unacceptable attacks that Iran is carrying out against the countries of the region – whether directly or through proxies such as in Lebanon and Iraq,” wrote Macron after a telephone conversation with Peseschkian on the platform

With regard to the war, he spoke of an “uncontrolled escalation” that would plunge the entire region into chaos, with serious consequences for today and the years to come. The victims are the civilian population – in Iran and everywhere in the region.

The Iranian government had already commented on the phone call and, like Macron, mentioned the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as one of the topics. Macron called for freedom of navigation in the strait to be restored as quickly as possible. Due to Iranian shelling and threatened attacks, trade has almost come to a standstill./lkl/DP/zb
