Maarten van der Weijden in hospital due to stomach bleeding | show

Maarten van der Weijden had a stomach bleeding and had to be hospitalized. The former Olympic open water swimming champion shares this news via social media.

The swimmer shares a photo of herself from the hospital bed. ‘Sometimes life doesn’t turn out the way you hoped’, says Van der Weijden. ‘Nine days ago I was urgently admitted to the hospital in Den Bosch. After examination, my complaints turned out to be caused by a heavy bleeding in my stomach,’ writes Van der Weijden. The 41-year-old, who was diagnosed with leukemia in the past, was particularly concerned that cancer could again be the reason he was hospitalized.

The bleeding has now been found and closed and the swimmer can go home. ‘I am grateful that the bleeding has stopped and thankful that cancer is not the cause of the bleeding,’ says van der Weijden. He also thanks the doctors and nurses who have taken care of him over the past week.

He says the recovery will take some time. ‘But I’m glad I can go home and will see step by step what can be done in the coming period.’
