In the game in France, the hosts quickly took control and established a clear situation. In the final phase things only get exciting again for a short time. A DFB star cheers against the former club.

First defeat for the women of VfL Wolfsburg in the 2025/26 Champions League: In the preliminary round game at OL Lyonnes, the “Wolves” suffered a deserved 1:3 (0:2) defeat. After two wins, coach Stephan Lerch’s team’s streak is now broken.

Ada Hegerberg (25th, 30th) and Wendie Renard (72nd, penalty kick) scored for the superior hosts, where German international Jule Brand, who was in Wolfsburg until last summer, was also on the pitch from the start. Brand had some good scenes until she was substituted (66′). Lineth Beerensteyn could only shorten the score (80′).

Lyon missed a number of other clear opportunities, and Korbin Shrader was unlucky when he hit the crossbar twice shortly before the break. Wolfsburg only had one promising action, Beerensteyn hit the post (43′). Even after the change, Lyon rarely found themselves in trouble against largely harmless guests.

For Wolfsburg it was the seventh defeat in a row against their long-term rivals in Europe. Only last season, Lyon had prevailed in both group games; before that, there had been three final defeats in the premier class against the French record champions.
