Lyon signs Grosso as Blanc’s successor – first Italian coach at Olympique

Return to old place of work

Olympique Lyon has presented Fabio Grosso as their new coach. The 45-year-old former professional, Germany’s shock at the 2006 World Cup, signed a contract with the bottom team in Ligue 1 until the end of the season with an option for a further year. This is the Italian’s sixth head coaching position, his last position being where he ended in the summer after 86 games and a points average of 1.74.

Grosso was already under contract with OL as a player and played 78 times for Lyon between 2007 and 2009. Now he has to get the seven-time French champions back on track after they started the season with just one point from four games. Laurent Blanc then had to leave.

Grosso becomes the first Italian coach on the Lyon sidelines. “Olympique Lyon is delighted to welcome back Fabio Grosso, with whom the club has always had an excellent relationship since his departure in 2009, and has great confidence in his ability to mobilize the team again. He will attend the game against Le Havre on Sunday evening before being presented to the media on Monday,” a club statement said.

In the meantime, ex-Frankfurt player Oliver Glasner, former Chelsea coach Graham Potter and ex-Wolverhampton coach Julen Lopetegui and Lille’s Paulo Fonseca were also reported in the media, as was recently Grosso’s ex-teammate Gennaro Gattuso.
