Luuk de Jong is Eredivisie top scorer of the century: ‘It is a phenomenon’

Luuk de Jong is the Eredivisie top scorer of the century. The PSV striker scored twice on Wednesday evening, passing former Ajax player Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who was the record holder so far. De Jong now has 155 goals in the Eredivisie to his name. After the match against Go Ahead Eagles, there was nothing but praise for his performance.

With the house specialty, he scored two goals against Go Ahead Eagles. The striker headed twice and scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season. But over this entire century, these were his 154th and 155th goals.

“He can do a lot more than just head.”

His trainer Peter Bosz could only praise his captain. “It is a phenomenon. He can bounce balls and hold them. But he is also very important in chasing. De Jong can do much more than just head, that is what makes him so good. He is the man in shape.”

Yet De Jong’s heading remains an unprecedented weapon. You may even wonder whether it can be defended. On Wednesday evening, he scored his 50th and 51st goals with his head in the PSV shirt.

“It is also nice for Luuk that he receives good crosses from his teammates.”

Teammate Veerman is often the pointer for the striker at corners and regularly knows where to find him. “He nods them in. Everything goes on goal. That is a quality,” says Veerman. “But,” he adds with a laugh: “It’s also nice for Luuk that he gets good crosses from his teammates.”
