Lufthansa shares are falling: strike has begun at Lufthansa subsidiary Discover Airlines

The flight staff’s strike has started at the Lufthansa subsidiary Discover Airlines.

The pilots’ union Cockpit Association (VC) announced this on Friday. Three flights of the striking airline were canceled on the flight schedule for the morning, namely to Cancun in Mexico and to the Canary Islands destinations Fuerteventura and Tenerife. The return flights from the islands were also canceled.

The airline had announced that it wanted to bring as many passengers as possible to their destination. One of two flights to Windhoek (Namibia) was canceled that evening, but for technical reasons, a spokeswoman said. The remaining flights would be offered by Discover itself or by partner airlines as planned. The company has already returned ten flights that it was supposed to fly on Friday for the parent company Lufthansa in Munich. Lufthansa wanted to implement the connections elsewhere. In principle, only departures from Germany can be struck, but this can also have consequences for connecting flights.

The Cockpit pilots’ union has called on its members to go on an all-day strike. The cabin union UFO later joined this with a warning strike that also lasted 24 hours without a prior strike vote. It’s about initial collective agreements in the holiday airline, which was only founded two and a half years ago and currently has 24 aircraft. The interaction between pilots and flight attendants should make it more difficult for the company to find sufficient staff for the flights, union circles said.

The Lufthansa Group’s holiday airline was initially launched in the Corona summer of 2021 under the name “Eurowings Discover” and was later renamed “Discover Airlines”. Discover is intended to be cheaper than the Lufthansa core brand and to compete with holiday airlines such as Condor. The company currently has 24 aircraft.

The Lufthansa share temporarily lost 1.20 percent to 7.68 euros via XETRA.
