THEand first images on the set, released this summer, have done a little scorched earth to the new series of Ryan Murphy, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Fans of Carolyn Bessette they immediately criticized approximate accessories and styling, the “wrong” hair color and a wardrobe deemed unrealistic and almost irreverent for one of the United States’ greatest icons of elegance and royalty. With the arrival of official trailerhowever, the judgment on the series (out February 13th on Disney+) seems to have softened: on social media we talk about intimate atmosphere, authentic emotions and a human and vulnerable portrait of the one who Sotheby’s he called it “the closest thing America has ever had to its own Princess Diana.”

The trailer of American Love Story: the weight of the spotlight behind a cover love (perhaps a little banal)

The trailer shows the evolution of the love story between John F. Kennedy Jr.played by the young man Paul Anthony KellyAnd Carolyn Bessetteplayed by the talented Sarah Pidgeon. The initial spark, the passion, the love and the great obstacle to overcome: the spotlight of an entire country focused on them. The series, first chapter of the anthology Love Storyis inspired by the book by Elizabeth Beller Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. The initial romantic atmosphere quickly turns into a crescendo of paparazzi flashes and media pressure. The script of the trailer, perhaps a little banal, focuses heavily on classic behind the scenes of a cover story lovewith dialogues constructed more to create tension than to tell reality. It’s a story in parts too sensationalisticwhich however is incomplete and tries to humanize the icon Carolyn Bessette.

Carolyn Bessette, the vulnerable portrait of an icon

The trailer gives a more authentic vision of Carolyn: career woman, independent, charming and, at a certain point, in love. She is not just the style icon that everyone remembers, but a woman vulnerabletorn between her love for JFK Jr. and the pressure of the spotlight, her independence. Carolyn seems to become the beating heart of the seriesa figure who, behind the 90s glamor and the incessant spotlight, shows fears, doubts and difficult choices. As a style icon, her portrayal in the series disappointed many viewers, it’s true. But the most intimate and human portrait it could surprise and win over those who decide to watch the series. We’ll just have to wait and see. After all, you never deny yourself a second chance.
