The shot forward thanks to the increase in the teams of the women’s football tournament: 16 for women, 12 for men

The pink sport revolution does not stop. After the gender equality reached at the Paris 2024 games and the recent and decidedly significant election of Kirsty Coventry as president of the IOC, a historical overtaking is now announced: at the Olympics of Los Angeles 2028 there will be more women than men. And underneath there is the paw of the new number one of world sport.

Football decides

The shot forward compared to the male squadron comes thanks to the increase in the teams of the women’s football tournament: 16 women of women and 12 of men will be 16 national teams. In Paris it was exactly the opposite. Two other female teams have been added in water polo, becoming 12, like male colleagues. The decision was made today by the IOC and the effects are clear: in Los Angeles we will have 50.7% of women and 49.3% of men, 5,333 athletes and 5,167 athletes.

This is the most interesting novelty – socially and culturally – of the next edition of the games that also see the arrival of new disciplines: baseball/softball, cricket T20, flag football, lacrosse and squash. In the sports that we will see in 2028 for the first time, however, men are still the majority, 376 against 322. Not bad, the revolution is already accomplished.
