Near the city of Villa San Giovanni, in the south of Italy, the police have intercepted an illegal transport of thousands of birds. The animals, around 2,200 pieces, including protected species, were transported in a van. The small birds were in homemade cages. The vehicle was stopped at a traffic control and the driver could be picked up. He is accused of several crimes, including animal abuse and the possession of protected wild animal species.
