Georg Koch is dead. The former goalkeeper for Fortuna Düsseldorf, Arminia Bielefeld and MSV Duisburg died at the age of 54 as a result of cancer.
“It is with great sadness that Fortuna says farewell to Georg Koch and will always honor his memory,” said Fortuna Düsseldorf on Wednesday. “The condolences and condolences of all Fortunes go out to his family, his friends and everyone who knew and valued Georg Koch.”
The goalkeeper, who was born in Bergisch Gladbach, began his career at SpVgg Erkenschwick in the early 1990s. In his long career he played, among other things, for: Fortuna Dusseldorf, Arminia Bielefeldthe MSV Duisburg and most recently SC Herford. He came to a total of 213 Bundesliga– and 165 second division games.

Koch played most of the games for Fortuna, for whom he guarded the goal 118 times and managed to move from the then third-tier Oberliga to the Bundesliga. He also achieved promotions with Duisburg and Bielefeld. He also played abroad for PSV Eindhoven, Dinamo Zagreb and Rapid Vienna. From 2021 to 2023, Koch worked as a goalkeeper coach and later as a team manager for Viktoria Köln.
In April 2023, Koch was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In May 2024, he made the illness public and stated that at the time of diagnosis, doctors had given him an estimated remaining life expectancy of six months. In the end it was almost three years.
