Ljubljana Vice over transfer ban: Peaceful solution with 1. FC Köln was not possible

Slovenians complain about “radio silence”

In the appeal against the FIFA decision because of the transfer ban, Vice President Christian Dollinger from Olimpija Ljubljana does not give 1. FC Köln any great chances. However, the Bundesliga club wants to take action against the verdict and accuses the Slovenes of excessive claims.

Next week, 1. FC Köln will appeal against FIFA’s ruling on a transfer ban at the International Court of Arbitration for Sport Cas and is hoping for a temporary lifting. “From our point of view, FIFA made a completely absurd judgment without any basis,” said FC Managing Director Christian Keller on Thursday in Cologne.

The club is hoping for a so-called suspension pending a verdict. “Otherwise we need a plan B,” said Keller, who spoke of a draconian punishment. In the dispute with the Slovenian club Olimpija Ljubljana about the free transfer of the young player Jaka Cuber Potocnik, Cologne was handed a transfer ban of two transfer periods by FIFA and also had to pay 51,750 euros to the Slovenian club.

Cologne boss Keller complains about excessive demands, Ljubljana denounces “radio silence”.

Keller also reported that on August 30, there was a friendly, almost 90-minute conversation with two club representatives from Ljubljana. Afterwards, the guests thanked them in writing for a conversation in a “great atmosphere”, but did not want to accept the Cologne offer. The offer was higher than the amount that FC now has to pay to the Slovenian club. “What Ljubljana asked for was completely unrealistic,” said Keller, who was not in office when the player signed in January 2022. In addition to the club’s penalties, 17-year-old Potocnik has been handed a four-month ban.

Ljublljana official Dollinger had previously dem dem “Cologne City Gazette” said: “I assume that FIFA justified the judgment so well that it will also stand up in the next instance and the appeal of 1. FC Köln before the Cas will not be successful.”

In the “Bild” newspaper, Dollinger had previously commented on the failure of the negotiations with the people of Cologne. “We actually wanted to solve the matter peacefully and that’s why we were in Cologne last spring. We were very surprised that that wasn’t possible at a collegial club level,” said the vice-president. Nothing more came from the people of Cologne after that. “No counter offer, no reaction. There was just radio silence. From then on it was clear to us that we would file a lawsuit with FIFA,” explained Dollinger.

Should the transfer ban remain in place, according to the “Picture” five planned commitments not feasible. The list therefore includes a fast striker, a ten, a right-back and a seasoned six – in addition, the loaned central defender Julian Chabot (25) should move permanently from Sampdoria Genoa to the cathedral city if possible. It is also unclear what will happen to left-back Leart Paqarada (28), who has already been signed by St. Pauli, because he cannot currently be registered.
