Liverpool FC: Luis Díaz’s parents kidnapped in Colombia

Attacker missing against Nottingham

The parents of Colombian international Luis Díaz were kidnapped in his home country on Saturday. While the Liverpool FC professional’s mother has already been rescued, the father is missing, according to local authorities, and a large search is underway. The news agency “AP” reported this on Sunday.

“It’s a worrying situation for all of us and it was a pretty tough night,” Reds coach Jürgen Klopp said on Sunday ahead of the Premier League game against Nottingham Forest. “I’ve never had that before. It’s a new experience that I never needed.” Klopp did not nominate Díaz for the matchday squad. “Of course we had to make a late change due to Luis Diaz’s personal situation.”

Luis Diáz’s parents kidnapped by gunmen at a gas station

The country’s police chief, William Salamanca, said in a video statement that every available officer would be used to find the father. Díaz’s mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was rescued by police in her hometown of Barrancas in the north of the country. The authorities offered a reward of 200 million pesos (about 46,000 euros) for information leading to the release of Díaz’s father. According to Colombian media reports, the parents of the 26-year-old left winger were at a gas station in Barrancas when they were approached by armed men on motorcycles. They are then said to have been taken away in a vehicle.

The Colombian Football Federation said the kidnapping was regrettable and called on authorities to rescue the father. Liverpool FC also commented on Sunday: “We sincerely hope that the matter will be resolved safely and at the earliest possible opportunity. In the meantime, the player’s welfare will continue to be our top priority.”
