A living white-beaked dolphin stranded off the coast of Egmond aan Zee on Sunday evening, reports SOS Dolfijn. The animal is kept cool with wet cloths, the foundation writes on Facebook.
According to NH News, the white-beaked dolphin was discovered by hikers. The animal will be taken to the SOS Dolfijn shelter to see how it can be saved. According to spokesperson Jeroen Hoekendijk of SOS Dolfijn, the animal appears at first glance to have ‘no injuries or entanglements’. “He also didn’t seem very thin. But as soon as we get to the shelter, a vet is ready and then we will take a closer look.” Hoekendijk told NH Nieuws.
The white-beaked dolphin is a robust dolphin species that can grow between 2.5 and 3 meters in length, reports SOS Dolfijn. They have a blunt snout and a high sickle-shaped dorsal fin and weigh between 180 and 360 kilos.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, the animals mainly live in the north of the Atlantic Ocean, but also in the North Sea. It is rare for white-beaked dolphins to wash up in the Netherlands.
