ESTOFEX warns of more storms

On a weather map released this morning, ESTOFEX shows in purple where the heaviest storms are expected today and tonight. In addition to northern Italy, Austria and Slovenia, western Slovakia and Hungary could also suffer. “Get ready to take shelter when you’re in the purple area. Take this situation seriously,” warns French climate expert Nahel Belgherze.

According to ESTOFEX, the first supercells developed over the Alps during the afternoon. Large to very large hail balls in combination with strong winds have a high damage potential in these types of storms.

In the course of the evening, the temperature will start to drop from the west, making it easier for the storm to move to lower areas. Then the heaviest storm is expected. “In some places there is a risk of very large (5 to 10 cm) to gigantic (greater than 10 cm) hail balls and extremely strong gusts of wind. The combination of the two can cause a lot of damage.”

Although the conditions are not ideal, some past cases show that “tornadoes and even strong tornadoes are also very possible”, according to ESTOFEX.

Northern Italy will be the first to be hit by the heavy storms. Then they will move eastwards, via the northern Adriatic Sea towards Slovenia and/or northern Croatia. After that it would become quieter, but Italy in particular risks a few extra thunderstorms with hail during the night.

Swiss police warn after dead and injured: “Stay inside”

Swiss police La Chaux-de-Fonds and Neuchâtel ask residents to be careful and stay indoors, eThere would be another thunderstorm on the way.

Earlier in the day, a death occurred a Chaux-de-Fonds by the storm. A man in his fifties was in a car that was crushed by a construction crane. Fifteen people were also injured in the city. Nothing is known about their condition.

The storm itself this morning did not last long, but the strong gusts of wind still caused a lot of damage. Several vehicles were damaged or completely destroyed, roofs were ripped off and trees were uprooted. The rail network and bus services in the region were also affected by the storm.

According to the Swiss weather service MétéoSuisse, it was “a likely tornado linked to a rapidly developing thunderstorm cell along the Jura (mountain range on the border between France and Switzerland, ed.)” that reached the city on Monday morning. MétéoSuisse recorded a wind gust of 217 kilometers per hour at the airfield in La Chaux-de-Fonds, “under a thunderstorm cell that suddenly strengthened as it reached the region”.

Authorities even compared this morning’s storm to a 1926 tornado that destroyed 30 farms.

Emergency services, meanwhile, continue with rescue operations and cleaning up the city. The police ask residents to avoid risks, such as falling roof tiles or trees, and to stay indoors as much as possible.
