UN Human Rights Chief: Israel must stop taking over Gaza directly

Israel must immediately stop his plans for “a full military takeover of the occupied Gaza Strip,” says the Human Rights Chief of the United Nations, Volker Türk. The policy is contrary to the assignment of the International Court of Appeal in The Hague to terminate the occupation as quickly as possible, does not contribute to a two -state solution and violates the rights of the Palestinians, Türk believes.

“All evidence indicates that further escalation will lead to more forced relocations, more dead, more unbearable suffering, meaningless destruction and cruel crimes,” writes Türk. He states that Israel should focus on saving human lives by allowing humanitarian aid. Türk also says that armed Palestinian groups must release the hostages.

In the night from Thursday to Friday, the Israeli Security Cabinet agreed to a proposal from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to take Gaza city. Preparations are being made.
