King Willem-Alexander will celebrate his birthday on April 27 with his family in the Limburg capital, after the party was unable to take place there in 2020 due to the corona measures.

14:16 pm – André Rieu performs on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein
When the royal company arrives at Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, they are shown a performance by André Rieu. He plays a special king waltz together with his 60-piece Johan Straus orchestra.

14:04 – King’s Day starts on Sint Servaasbrug
The royal family arrives by bus on the Sint Servaasbrug on April 27. This is where the King’s Day program in Maastricht starts. The party is received by Mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake and Governor Emile Roemer. Several brass bands will perform on the bridge.

13:10 – Big party on the Vrijthof after the King’s Day program ends
Although the program lasts about two hours, there will be a lot of celebration in Maastricht for a long time to come. The mayor has announced several side events and the large stage on the Vrijthof will remain standing for the time being.

13:02 – ‘Association life is the backbone of Maastricht’
Just before the Vrijthof, the royal family walks through the Bredestraat. This street will be transformed into a veritable hall of fame where club life can show itself to the full.

Arriving at the Vrijthof, Rowwen Hèze gives a performance. ‘Barefoot Bride’ is a song specially written by the band for King’s Day 2020. The song was later released on a new album, but with different lyrics. They will sing the original text, together with another singer, on the Vrijthof.

12:58 pm – André Rieu gives mini concert on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein
Rieu plays a special waltz for the royal party. Together with his 60-piece Johan Straus orchestra, he gives a performance on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein.

Also permanent is discussed: singer Beppie Kraft, dressed and all, will give a performance.

12:54 pm – Royal company must puzzle out ‘Maastricht reading board’ themselves
A special ‘Maastricht reading board’ has been made. The royal family has to unravel typical Maastricht words, in the form of a modern escape room. The winners receive the key to the city center: then the family can walk towards the heart of the city.

Then the family arrives at a kind of ‘Burgundian boulevard’ where they are served a piece of pie, among other things.

12:51 pm – DJ duo Lucas and Steve perform in Stadspark
The well-known DJ duo Lucas & Steve will perform in the Stadspark in collaboration with other orchestras. The royal family will walk by here. University students, meanwhile, will be preparing a major flash mob.

12:47 pm – ‘All South Limburg municipalities are covered’
Hermans explains that every municipality in South Limburg can show itself in Het Bat. The royal party will walk along this during the route. An example of this is a mini-Pinkpop festival, characteristic of the municipality of Landgraaf.

Europe will also be discussed: “Maastricht is the most European city in the Netherlands. The well-known treaty was also signed here.”

12:41 pm – ‘Music predominates during King’s Day’
The program booklet states that music will predominate. For example, the program will start with three different brass bands that will parade over the Sint Servaas Bridge. This is without the royal party. They arrive in a bus behind the brass bands, get out in the middle of the bridge and are then received by mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake and governor Emile Roemer.

By the way: “There may be circumstances for changes to the program.” This, for example, is due to the war in Ukraine, explains Hermans.

Serve Hermans, program leader King’s Day Maastricht, explains more about the program. “Live Maastricht, the theme, means ‘sweet’ and ‘warm’ in our region, and we want to show that in all facets.”

12:35 pm – ‘Multiple scenarios for King’s Day in Maastricht
Several scenarios had been made for King’s Day: including one with any applicable COVID measures and a ‘full swing’ King’s Day. In the end it became the last one: “It goes on!” said Annemarie Penn-te Strake. “We can’t wait.”

The governor, Emile Roemer, is not present. He is in quarantine and therefore could not attend. The mayor reads a text from him: “Dear attendees, I am very happy that King’s Day 2022 can take place in Maastricht. King’s Day is a day of connection and fraternization. (…) We can leave Limburg and Maastricht from our best side. see.”

12:30 pm – Mayor of Maastricht takes the floor
“We are all excited. It was a long and winding road to get here,” said Annemarie Penn-te Strake. With this she refers to the corona pandemic: as a result, the party could not take place in 2020. Eindhoven was allowed to organize the party in 2021.

Penn-te Strake: “King’s Day is a moment of fraternization for us: show that you belong together and can celebrate a party together. Our city is like no other city. For people outside and the region.”

The King’s Day program will be presented on Tuesday afternoon in the Muziekgieterij in Maastricht. Meanwhile, the Dutch press is slowly trickling in.

Explanation of activities
Mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake and Servé Hermans, program leader King’s Day Maastricht, will explain the festivities on Tuesday afternoon. Governor Emile Roemer would also be there, but he has to be absent due to a positive corona test.

The organization has recently worked out several scenarios. It is now clear that now that the corona rules have disappeared, it will be a full celebration of King’s Day as intended in 2020.

Ukraine
Due to the war in Ukraine, it is not yet entirely certain whether King’s Day in Maastricht can go ahead as planned, it became clear earlier. However, the party has not yet been cancelled, emphasizes a spokesperson for the municipality of Maastricht.

“We look at the situation from day to day. The most important party is the royal family itself and we are in consultation with each other on a daily basis. Developments in Ukraine follow each other quickly and we will act accordingly – if necessary.”
