Little Amal arrived in Amsterdam after a long journey: “She knows how to touch people’s hearts”

She has already completed a journey of more than 9,000 kilometers. Today she is in Amsterdam. The life-size doll Little Amal represents a 10-year-old Syrian refugee who is looking for her mother. With the tour, the authors want to draw attention to the situation of refugees worldwide.

Amal started her journey last year from Gaziantep, Turkey, near the border with Syria. She has visited more than eighty towns and cities in thirteen countries, including New York, London and Paris. And now little Amal is in Amsterdam. Followed by a large crowd, she walked from Dam Square to the Anne Frank House.

Amal – Arabic for ‘hope’ – is an idea of ​​the theater company the Handspring Puppet Company. The doll is controlled by four people. According to artistic director Amir Nizar Zuabi, Amal melts hearts wherever she goes.

“What we’ve created also comes with a great responsibility. And that’s telling the refugees’ story from a different angle. It’s interesting to see how she manages to touch people’s hearts worldwide.”
