WITH VIDEOThe artist who fell from a great height during a performance by the Christmas Circus Haarlem is out of danger. The circus reports that the acrobat is approachable and needs a lot of pain relief. He will be examined further for fractures or internal injuries, for example. Lisa Adriaansen (36) and her two children aged 7 and 10 saw the acrobat fall up close. “It was really nice to see.”

The accident happened around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night. There were about a thousand spectators in the circus tent at the time. “At first everyone thought it was part of the act, but then it became clear that it was a very serious incident,” says Adriaansen, who had come to the circus especially from The Hague with her two girls. “According to my youngest, the acrobat made a kind of somersault and that went horribly wrong.”

The victim, a male acrobat probably in his twenties, fell ‘about fifteen meters’, according to illusionist Hans Klok. Adriaansen estimates that it was about 7 meters. “It was certainly high and he fell to the ground with a huge blow. Then a wheel of some kind hit his head. My youngest girl of 7 reacted very strongly to it.” Visitors reacted in disbelief to the incident, says Adriaansen. ,, The organization immediately requested not to make videos. Unfortunately, there were still some who did. They were addressed by the rest.”

Busy for an hour

The circus performer was injured and taken to hospital and aid workers led the audience out of the circus. “Obviously the show was cancelled. They had just been on the road for an hour, the incident happened just after the break. I am glad that the acrobat is doing better now”, concludes Adriaansen.

The circus offers help if spectators need it. “Among the thousand spectators there were also a lot of children who saw this person fall down. This is very intense to see, so from the police we advise you to contact the doctor if they get complaints after this. Victim support is also available.

The Christmas circus has been in the Burgemeester Reinaldapark in Haarlem-East since December 22. Performances are planned up to and including 8 January, including with Hans Klok. The shows of the coming days will continue as planned, according to the circus.

Reaction Hans Klok

Klok tells Shownieuws that he did not see the accident happen because he was changing for his second act of the evening. “Very tragic,” he said of the accident. According to the illusionist, it happened during an act with a large spinning wheel. “A lot of accidents happen,” he says to Shownieuws. The victim, a male acrobat, fell ‘about fifteen meters’ down, according to Klok. “Now we wait. (…) Let’s hope it goes well.”
