Linus Gechter is a Hertha fan through and through. But as a child he wanted to reject the move to the BSC. A trainer had to come to his house.

Linus Gechter is considered a Hertha identification figure, a Berlin boy who remains loyal to the club he loves. But everything almost turned out differently. “I actually didn’t want to go to Hertha BSC,” admits the 20-year-old central defender in an interview with the “Tagesspiegel”. The reason: “My friends were in Zehlendorf.”

In order to convince the then eleven-year-old boy, Hertha BSC Coach Gora Sen personally went to the Gechter family’s home. “After a short period of deliberation, I agreed. And that was the best decision I could have made,” says Gechter today.

The defender has now been at Hertha half his life. “Hertha is my heart’s club and always will be. I would say that I feel a love for this club,” he says. This season Gechter is one of the regular players and has the fourth most minutes of action of all professionals.

In the interview, Gechter also reveals: Felix Magath wanted to put him in the attack in the first leg of the relegation game “because he really liked my shot and my finish.” Gechter doesn’t know why the plan wasn’t implemented.
