FC Augsburg has announced the signing of Japanese attacker Ryota Onoda. The 18-year-old comes from the college team of the Japanese first division club Cerezo Osaka and has a long-term contract with the Fuggerstadt team until 2030.
“Ryota Onoda spent a week in trial training with us and drew attention. In the U23’s final test match, he showed a convincing performance, not just because of his four goals. He brings a lot of talent and we are convinced that he can take the next development steps in this environment,” explained Augsburg’s sports director Benjamin Weber.
According to the FCA statement, Onoda said after his move: “It has always been my dream to play in Germany and to make the leap into the Bundesliga there at some point. That’s why I am very happy and proud to play for FC Augsburg in the future. The professional environment at the Paul Renz Academy, the training conditions and the support are ideal for my personal and footballing development. I am very grateful to the FCA for the opportunity.”
Europe instead of J1 League for Onoda
“Ryota is right-footed, can play as a center forward or on both wings and is known for his speed and goal-scoring ability,” explains Takako Maruga, Area Manager JP at Transfermarkt. “He could have turned professional at Cerezo Osaka, but since he always wanted to play in Europe, after discussions with the club he decided without hesitation to go to the European market.”
According to research from Transfermarkt in Japan Onoda took part in a training session at another German club as a trial player in the summer of 2025, when he was in the eleventh grade of high school and was a member of Cerezo’s U18 team. He received a positive review and was on the move, but the two clubs were unable to reach a final agreement due to contractual disagreements. Afterwards, Onoda waited in Osaka for his next chance.
