Limburg photographer at volcano: ‘You can feel the heat coming’

Wednesday it came to a head and the volcano erupted. At that time, Graatje was in Budapest to take pictures of Formula 1. From the airport he left directly for the lava spewing volcano. Once there, it is also important to think about safety: “You have to stand out of the wind. All kinds of gases come out of the volcano, you don’t know whether that is dangerous. If you stand 50 meters from the lava, the earth’s crust below you can be very thin. That can break open quickly. When you stand there, you can feel the heat coming towards you. That is very unreal,” says Graatje.
