Lilian Marijnissen is resigning as SP faction leader

SP leader Lilian Marijnissen will immediately step down as party leader and Member of the House of Representatives, she has just announced. She says that after the elections she noticed that the result was not what the SP hoped for and that there is a need for a new face in the party.

“It was an honor to be a representative of the people,” the politician from Oss writes on X. Because the election results were disappointing, she decided to immediately step down as party leader and Member of Parliament. ‘I have always been aware that it is a great, but also temporary honor to be the captain of my party.’

The SP was almost halved in the elections for the House of Representatives, going from 9 to 5 seats. A day after the elections, Marijnissen stated that he wanted to continue after consultation with the faction and party employees. She was supported in this by her party. However, she had a hard time with the results. “I am very sick from it. This is a bad result for us,” she said.

The SP leadership wanted to learn lessons from the new loss. “We will first conduct thorough research. Among voters, among our members and especially by speaking to many people on the street and in the neighborhoods and listening to them,” a spokesperson said.

Marijnissen has been the political leader of the Socialist Party since the end of 2017. At the time, it still had fourteen seats in the Chamber. Since then the party has only lost in elections.
