Paludi of Hawizeh (Iraq). (askanews) – After a long drought, rains have brought water back to the Hawizeh marshes in southern Iraq, a cross-border wetland area shared with Iran.

The images show fishing boats and water buffalo once again moving in one of the areas that symbolize the fragile environmental balance of the region.

“Life will return, with fish and livestock, and people will feel that their land and their future – says Kazim Kasid, a fisherman – have been returned, because it is in the swamps that their means of livelihood are found. We hope that the Iraqi government will take care of the population and pay more attention to the swamps.”
