American serial killer Rex Heuermann has been sentenced to life in prison for the so-called ‘Gilgo Beach killings’, reports The New York Times. The case is partly known because of the Netflix documentary Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer.

The police searched for the man for years and managed to arrest him three years ago. In April, the 62-year-old Heuermann admitted to have murdered eight women on the beach near New York.

In 2010, human remains were found for the first time on Gilgo Beach. When the police searched further, there were more many more bodies buried to lie on and around the beach. The murders were committed between 1993 and 2010.

Heuermann long denied being responsible for the deaths. He decided two months ago to confess that he had strangled and cut up the women. According to his lawyer, he admitted this to spare both his own family and the families of the victims a long trial.

The judge sentenced Heuermann to life in prison several times, without the possibility of parole.
