“What a waste of money”

A much discussed change of standard in Formula 1 is ineffective. Lewis Hamilton took air after qualifying.
The attempt to slow down McLaren with a rule adjustment has so far not had any effect. The British racing team also dominated the action in Barcelona. Oscar Piatri and Lando Norris set the best times in qualifying – and the competition remains.
According to the decision of the FIA automotive association, to proceed against so-called “Flexi-Wings”, all teams had to redesign their front wings. The flexible wings apply because they change under aerodynamic load as an advantage at high speed – and as a specialty of McLaren. However, the right of rule apparently did not use anything. Piatri and Norris dominated in qualifying as ever.
“What a waste of money,” said record world champion Lewis Hamilton on Saturday evening. The measures were “just a waste of money for everyone”. The Ferrari pilot also said that the right to rule “really did not change anything”. The wings would continue to bend, just half as strong as before.
Hamilton continues: “Everyone had to develop new wings and spend money. That makes no sense.” The 40-year-old also emphasized that the money used for it should have been “better used for charitable purposes”.
For Hamilton, the deficit to the top is still clear. He currently does not believe in a catch -up in the World Cup. He is “half a second,” said the Brit. In order to close this gap, an enormous development effort is necessary: ”For months of work, development is going into development to find a tenth of a second. We will certainly not find half a second, and we would need that.”
