Lewis Hamilton already won the Formula 1 race in Belgium five times. In Ferrari, the superstar is far away – and has to cope with a weak start.
Formula 1 record world champion Lewis Hamilton simply does not get going in Ferrari. “At the moment I am just limitlessly frustrated,” said the 40-year-old after his debacle in qualifying for the sprint race in Belgium. Only 18th place jumped out for the British because he turned in the crucial round and did not bring about a good time. “Something like that has not happened to me in my whole career,” said Hamilton, who slipped off the track after his spin.
Particularly bitter: Ferrari is on the traditional route in Spa-Francorchamps with a new rear wheel suspension, which should actually bring the solution for some problems to the hard to drive. That didn’t work in the case of Hamilton. It goes on Saturday (12 p.m./Sky) from far back into the short race over a good 100 kilometers and has little chance of World Cup points.
In the overall ranking, the seven -time champion is only in sixth place at halftime of the year. From the goal of winning eight titles as the first Formula 1 driver, he is far away and is also behind team-mate Charles Leclerc, who has 16 points more in the account. Hamilton was able to win the sprint in Shanghai early in the year, otherwise there is hardly any reason to be happy in the first year after its spectacular change from Mercedes.
“Tomorrow is a new day. I hope it will go better,” said Hamilton on Friday. It seems possible that a mechanical problem was responsible for his involuntary departure that can be solved at least very quickly. On Sunday, the Grand Prix is then on the program in the Ardennes.
