For Bayer Leverkusen, the dream of the DFB Cup ends prematurely. A third division team threw the Werkself out of the competition.

The chances of a title for Doublesieger Bayer Leverkusen threaten to disappear after the surprising trophy in the semi-finals. The team of Xabi Alonso left the competition after a 1: 2 against Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday evening. The frustration was clear: “It was by far the worst game this season,” said national player Robert Andrich. “We did a lot wrong”.

In the Bundesliga, Leverkusen is six points behind leaders FC Bayern Munich. The Rhinelander have already left the Champions League. The Werkself was lacking against Bielefeld on the offensive. Bayer seemed strangely uninspired and affected unusual inattention in the back. Read more about this here.

“We wrapped it off,” said Andrich: “We missed everything where we are strong. We did not prevail at the front, made mistakes again and again. So you don’t win against any team in the world.”

Meanwhile, the favorite fright from East Westphalia with Leverkusen also ran down to the fourth Bundesliga clubs in the current cup season. For the first time since Union Berlin 2001, a third -class club is again in the final. “We didn’t need luck at all, because we were on the pusher all the time,” said Bielefeld’s coach Mitch Kniat after the game.

In the Berlin Olympic Stadium, the Arminia will meet VfB Stuttgart or RB Leipzig on May 24th. In Berlin, Arminia will play either against VfB Stuttgart or RB Leipzig on May 24th, which will compete in the second semi-finals this Wednesday (8:45 p.m. in the T-Online live ticker). Should Bielefeld actually win the competition as the first third division team, the club will start in the Europa League next year.
