For victims who only report a rape days after the incident, the investigation often reached a dead end. Until now. Researchers from UZ Leuven and KU Leuven have developed a world first with SpermFACS: a new DNA technique that can identify perpetrators, even when there are hardly any traces. “This can really make a difference in many files,” says Professor Bram Bekaert, specialist in forensic genetics. This is how it works and these are the consequences for rape cases.
