National coach Nagelsmann brings Leon Goretzka back to the national team. Rightly so, says T-online columnist Stefan Effenberg-and warns Borussia Dortmund.
Now it is clear: Leon Goretzka returns to the German national team. National coach Julian Nagelsmann nominated him for the upcoming caps in the Nations League against Italy. I am very happy for Leon-because he really deserves the DFB comeback.
Already in my last column I also pleaded for Goretzka to wear the German jersey again – because he has had a remarkable year: Last summer he was on the siding at FC Bayern and before the farewell from Munich. And that is exactly where his true character showed: he stayed up, wanted to assert himself with Bayern – and did it. In the meantime he is a regular, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany relies on him, knows that he can rely on Goretzka.
The national coach will have seen this exactly – and have recognized that it makes absolutely sense to bring him back to the national team. Goretzka has the necessary experience, is an absolute full professional. You can’t assess your performance high enough. In my career I also played with some players who found themselves in similar situations as Goretzka. They then put themselves hanging, resigning themselves with their fate, only showed with half the use of use. Goretzka has now done exactly the opposite, fought out of this low. For me, he is currently the player of the season at FC Bayern.
Incidentally, Nagelsmann, who only looks at the now and thus recognizes Goretzka’s performance. Not only that. He also signals to other national players and those who want to become: only the current performance counts, completely independent of past merits or faults. These two games against Italy now are finally a location for the DFB team, two duels that we can look forward to.
In contrast to his last two predecessors, Nagelsmann not only distributes alms in the nominations – in contrast to his last two predecessors, but remains further with his consistent enforcement of the performance principle. For this reason, big names such as Serge Gnabry or Julian Brandt are also missing. Gnabry has struggled with many injuries in the past two years, is still more on the back and age strength than again in a top form. Brandt is simply too fluctuating in his performance at Borussia Dortmund, he lacks the consistency that is necessary.
And that is exactly why Jonathan Burkardt and Nadiem Amiri from Mainz 05 can be found in the DFB squad instead. At FSV, the collective is crucial under coach Bo Henriksen, but both Burkardt and Amiri still protrude. Nagelsmann rewarded the two for their constantly strong performances – and also makes Burkardt clear that, despite his numerous injury backs in recent years, he has never lost sight of him.
He also had Yann Aurel Bisseck in mind, who otherwise only really had on the screen in Germany. But if you become a defender at Inter Milan and is a regular player with a Champions League quarter finalists, you are rightly also in the national team squad.
Bisseck and Inter are also opponents of FC Bayern in the quarter -finals of the Champions League. This is a very experienced team in the premier class, top -class and uncomfortable to play. With goalkeeper Yann summer And defenders Benjamin Pavard are also two former Munich professionals who will give everything against their ex-club. These games are very different for the team of coach Vincent Kompany than the round of 16 against Bayer Leverkusen – and: more difficult.
