Lenovo ThinkPhone hands-on: The ultimate business smartphone?

The laptops are best known from Lenovo, above all the ThinkPad series, which is particularly popular with business users. Lenovo has now introduced a smartphone especially for this user group, which focuses on data security and seamless cooperation between cell phone and laptop.

In 2014, Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility. Since then, smartphones have mainly been available under this brand. But at CES 2023, Lenovo announced its very own smartphone – the Lenovo ThinkPhone (powered by Motorola). As the name suggests, it is closely related to the ThinkPad line and offers many features that – similar to those between the iPhone and MacBook – are intended to bring the phones and laptops closer together.

ThinkPhone and ThinkPad with one design language

Visually, the Lenovo ThinkPhone is nothing special. It is strongly reminiscent of Motorola smartphones and comes with a restrained, black case with a slightly textured back. What is striking, however, is the Think logo on the lower half of the back, which connects to that of the ThinkPads. Even the iconic red key you know from the laptops is on the side of the smartphone. It offers either direct access to the most important business and field service apps, immediately connects smartphones and PCs or starts push-to-talk, a function that works via Teams thanks to an app similar to a walkie-talkie.

The technical equipment corresponds to a smartphone of the upper class. Powered by a first-generation Snapdragon 8+ and either 8 or 12 GB of RAM, the ThinkPhone from Lenovo promises brisk performance. When it comes to storage, buyers can choose between 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB UFS 3.1. There is also no lack of current wireless connections. The smartphone also supports Wifi 6E on the 6 GHz band, 5G, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC and is dual SIM capable.

A precise first impression of the ThinkPhone can be found in the video:

Lenovo ThinkPhone focuses on security

As part of the new “Think 2 Think” connectivity, Lenovo relies on seamless cooperation between smartphone and laptop. Once connected via QR code, users can, for example, create a hotspot between the two groups of devices with one click, use any Android application on the laptop thanks to app streaming, and exchange files between the devices using drag-and-drop. Even the camera of the Lenovo ThinkPhone can be used as a webcam for the ThinkPads.

Lenovo also pays special attention to security. Thanks to the integrated Moto Secure functions, IT administrators can, for example, configure the ThinkPhone remotely and set lock screen settings or network warnings. In addition, the ThinkPhone comes with Moto KeySafe. This is a separate processor running on Android that adds an extra layer of security to better protect sensitive data.

The smartphone is delivered with Android 13. It has a 6.6-inch OLED display, making it one of the larger devices on the market. With a weight of 188.5 grams, it is easy to hold. This is partly due to the materials used. With the ThinkPhone, Lenovo relies on a light aramid fiber that is said to be stronger than steel, a frame made of aircraft aluminum and Gorilla Glass Victus to protect the display. In addition, the phone is waterproof and shockproof according to IP68 and MIL STD 810H.

The battery of the Lenovo ThinPhone has a capacity of 5000 mAh and supports particularly fast charging over 68 watts. Wireless is slower, only 15 watts are supported here. After all, the right power adapter is included with the phone, which is becoming increasingly rare these days. The smartphone is also well equipped when it comes to the camera. It comes with a triple camera, the main sensor of which has a resolution of 50 megapixels. There is also an ultra wide angle with 13 megapixels and a depth sensor.

Prices and Availability

In principle, the Lenovo ThinkPhone can be connected to all laptops that run at least Windows 10. However, the functions have been optimized for the interaction between ThinkPad and ThinkPhone. Lenovo has not yet been able to name an exact market launch to TECHBOOK. However, it should be available in all major markets in the coming months.
