The transfer poker around Wesley Fofana (21) is developing more and more into transfer theater. Leicester City’s Chelsea centre-back has been transferred to the Under-23s by manager Brandon Rodgers and has been dropped from the squad for Saturday’s clash with the Blues. “If you don’t have the right attitude, we have to move on. Chelsea are said to have offered the equivalent of 71 million transfers plus 12 million euros in possible bonuses – that wasn’t enough for the “Foxes”. Leicester are reportedly insisting on a record fee for a defender of around 95 million euros. Leicester also sold the most expensive defender in football history to date in 2019, with Harry Maguire (29) to Manchester United for 85 million euros.

Rodgers recalls this transfer, which went through with less background noise, almost wistfully: “It was totally different. I knew it could happen over the summer but in all fairness to Harry, in terms of behavior and his focus for the club, it was fantastic right up to the last minute. He was part of the team and then moved on.”

Fofana was referred to the stands by the coach in the 2-1 draw against Southampton FC. The Foxes’ steadfastness in this matter is all the more astonishing considering they are the only Premier League club not to have paid a cent in transfer fee this summer. Hardly anything has happened to date, both in terms of departures and additions, since in order to spend money you first have to rely on income. The owners of the indebted club gave Rodgers an early warning that there will be no big jumps in the transfer market this summer.
The hope of selling Youri Tielemans (25) for a high fee has so far been in vain, which is probably why attempts are being made to get as much as possible out of poker for Fofana. “Some of my seasons here we’ve lost players, we’ve lost Ben Chillwell, but unfortunately this situation is a little different,” Rodgers said.
