Legendary Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier, responsible for countless hits by The Supremes, The Four Tops and Marvin Gaye, dies aged 81

American songwriter Lamont Dozier has died. He has turned 81, his son announced on Tuesday. The cause of death is unknown.

Dozier is best known as a member of the production team he formed with brothers Brian and Eddie Holland. The trio is responsible for countless hits by Motown artists such as The Supremes, The Four Tops and Marvin Gaye.

Dozier was particularly successful with The Supremes. He co-wrote ten of the twelve songs that reached number 1 in America, including classics like baby love and Stop! In The Name Of Love.

Holland-Dozier-Holland was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The three received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015.
