League lead extended: HSV celebrates last-minute victory at Hannover 96

Status: 09/30/2022 8:27 p.m

Hamburger SV won the northern duel at Hannover 96 on Friday evening 2-1 (1-1). Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer was the winning goalscorer in stoppage time in front of a crowd of 49,000 in the sold-out 96 Arena.

HSV thus extended its lead in the table. Chaser Darmstadt, who won in Paderborn, is already three points behind, and the advantage over third place is already five points. The Lower Saxony, who could only convince defensively and conceded their first defeat after five unbeaten games, remain fourth in the table for the time being.

Hamburg will continue on October 8th (8:30 p.m.) with the home game against newly promoted Kaiserslautern, while Hannover will visit 1. FC Heidenheim a day later (1:30 p.m.).

Two curious hits on each page

The game started extremely unluckily for the guests: HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes played a harmless ball on the left side to Miro Muheim, who slipped away when receiving it, Muroya sprinted in between and shot from the penalty area line into the empty goal to make it 1-0 early for 96 a (4th).

However, HSV was unimpressed by the faux pas of their defender and continued their usual possession game. Sonny Kittel missed the first good HSV chance, Ron-Robert Zieler saved the corner shot (13′). Shortly thereafter, however, the 96 keeper was powerless: A low cross from Moritz Heyer unluckily extended Börner into his own net (15′).

Lots of fouls, few chances to score

In the period that followed, both teams were concerned with ball safety – HSV dominated, Hannover were compact. There were only a few clear chances to score. If anything, it was dangerous in front of Zieler’s goal: Robert Glatzel and Muheim had opportunities to take the lead for HSV. (40th, 41st).

Otherwise it was sometimes rough on the pitch: Hamburg’s Mario Vuskovic and Laszlo Benes picked up yellow cards for rude actions, as did Hanover’s Börner. Vuskovic was also lucky not to receive a second yellow card for a wipe in the face from Cedric Teuchert.

Königsdörffer with the last minute goal

Even after the restart, it was HSV who developed more of a goal: Glatzel missed twice (51′, 52′), Sonny Kittel failed at Zieler (67′). On the other side, Enzo Leopold missed one of the rare 96 opportunities (56th).

Both coaches tried to give their teams new offensive impulses with fresh players. Hendrik Weydandt (69th) came into play at Hannover and HSV Königsdörffer (70th). While Hanover’s striker remained pale, Königsdörffer actually brought new momentum: once he slipped just past the ball (79th), once Zieler parried (85th). But in added time, the HSV attacker actually struck: After a corner kick for Hannover, he took the ball himself, then sprinted halfway and finally gave Zieler no chance to defend himself (90+2).
