League Cup surprise in England: Manchester City fails at Newcastle United

England’s football champions and league leaders Manchester City have been eliminated from the League Cup.

The Champions League winner lost 0-1 (0-0) to Premier League opponent Newcastle United in the third cup round on Wednesday evening (September 27th, 2023). Alexander Isak scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute and shot last season’s fourth-placed team into the round of 16.

Liverpool and Arsenal are through

Liverpool FC celebrated a 3-1 (0-1) win against second division club Leicester City. After the guests’ early lead through Kasey McAteer (3rd minute), Cody Gakpo (48th), ex-Leipzig player Dominik Szoboszlai (70th) and Diogo Jota (89th) turned the game in favor of coach Jürgen Klopp’s team.

National player Kai Havertz and his FC Arsenal achieved a 1-0 (1-0) win in the Premier League duel at Brentford FC thanks to Reiss Nelson’s goal (8th). Chelsea FC won 1-0 (0-0) against league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion with a goal from Nicolas Jackson (50th).

Double strike by Gamacho and Casemiro

The day before, England’s record champions Manchester United had easily reached the round of 16. Erik ten Hag’s team won confidently against Premier League rivals Crystal Palace 3-0 (2-0) and took another step out of their first low of the season with their second win in a row.

Alejandro Garnacho (21′) and Casemiro (27′) made it 2-0 at half-time with a double strike. After the break, Anthony Martial (55th) increased the score for the Red Devils.
