After three league defeats in a row and the elimination from the Champions League against FC Bayern, Lazio Rome coach Maurizio Sarri has resigned from his position. The Biancocelesti announced this on Wednesday. In a short message, the club thanked the 65-year-old and entrusted his assistant coach Giovanni Martusciello with the tasks. For how long, Lazio did not explain. According to reports, the previous assistant could also keep the reins in his hands on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Sarri, whose working paper would have been valid until 2025, is leaving the Serie A club after almost three years and 137 games with an average points average of 1.67 points. The reigning runner-up Lazio had slipped to ninth place in the championship (table). Sarri had recently shown himself to be anything but satisfied with the breadth and depth of his squad and publicly criticized it. The Italian said that the team was by no means sufficiently strong to play in four competitions.

Lazio spent significantly less money on transfers during the former Chelsea and Juventus coach’s tenure than in previous years (statistics). Sarri made it clear that this had not always been in his interest – especially since he felt his wishes were not sufficiently heard by the club management. “When I asked about player A, they let me choose between C and D,” said the coach, who added: “It wasn’t me who decided on the transfer market.” Now it’s time for “everyone to have their own “Takes responsibility,” said the coach just a few weeks ago.
