At the 2026 World Cup, the German national team has group games in Houston, Toronto and New Jersey. The neighborhood is not in any of the big cities, but in Winston-Salem in North Carolina. TV presenter Laura Wontorra looked around on site.
“It’s a beautiful facility,” she enthused in an interview with “Bild” about the area that she used for the Magenta documentary series “Wontorras World Cup – Father. Daughter. World Cup.” has examined. The DFB team will stay at The Graylyn Estate hotel and train at Wake Forest University, a few minutes away. But she also identified a possible problem: the DFB quarters are “very isolated in North Carolina”.
The TV presenter therefore questions “whether cabin fever can really arise if – as German football fans – we wish we were there until the end of the tournament.” There are “very few leisure activities” in the surrounding area, which could ultimately turn out to be an advantage: “Maybe it’s exactly the right thing because you grow together very well as a team.”
The players themselves are also asked because of the location of the area. “Maybe the boys will have to think about how many PlayStation stations they can take with them so that they don’t get bored,” said Wontorra. She also brought up an alternative employment opportunity: “The golf course should be beautiful. If you have a lot of golfers in the German national team, then they will have a good time there.”
The German national team will set off from Frankfurt for the USA on June 2nd, but will initially stay in Chicago. The last test match before the World Cup against the USA is on June 6th. After the duel, the DFB team travels to their quarters in North Carolina.
