The Haas racing team is facing upheaval. Two new pilots have already been signed, and now there is also a change in the team behind the team.

A German is making history in Formula 1: Laura Müller will become the first female race engineer in a premier class team in the coming season. She takes on the important role at Haas and will work there with French driver Esteban Ocon. The US racing team confirmed this on Tuesday. The new season begins on March 16th in Australia.

Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu praised Müller’s qualities: “She is very determined and hard-working, her work ethic is very, very good.” The team now has more female employees in its own ranks than in the past, and he emphasized that gender and nationality played no role in the staffing. The work counts, “I think it’s the right choice.”

Müller studied automotive engineering in Munich and previously worked as a performance engineer at Haas. She will work with Ocon on the set-up and be the voice in the Frenchman’s ear during the sessions: As a race engineer, she maintains contact with the driver via radio, and excerpts from the communication can also be heard again and again on live TV. She also brings experience from other racing series. Müller has already worked in the WEC World Endurance Championship and in the DTM.

Your promotion at Haas is now part of a comprehensive realignment within the racing team. Carine Cridelich is another woman taking up the position of head of strategy; she is moving from the Racing Bulls to Haas. The second driver alongside Esteban Ocon is the Englishman Oliver Bearman, both drivers are newcomers. Last season, the German Nico Hülkenberg and the Dane Kevin Magnussen drove for the team.
