Latvia delivers weapons to Ukraine, Spain promises tanks | War Ukraine and Russia

Latvia has announced that it will supply arms to Ukraine. This happened after talks at the American air base in Ramstein, Germany, where a group of forty allies coordinates military support to Ukraine. Spain also promises a dozen tanks.

According to the Latvian Ministry of Defense, all Stinger anti-aircraft missiles from the Baltic country, a member of the EU and NATO, will be delivered to Kiev. In addition, more Ukrainian soldiers will be trained in Latvia, a statement said.

“Latvia has responded to Ukraine’s request to provide air defense systems and has decided to supply Ukraine with all Stinger systems we have left. We will do our best to deliver them as soon as possible,” said Defense Minister Inara Murniece. However, it did not provide details about the number of aircraft or a delivery schedule.

Spain also announced the delivery of six of the ten Leopard 2 tanks on Friday, which should be delivered “within days”, according to Spanish minister José Manuel Albares. A second delivery of four tanks will follow later. It concerns ten of the 109 Leopard 2A4 tanks that Spain has, which are of an older model. Madrid also has 239 newer and more powerful 2A6s, but there is no talk of transferring them to Ukraine.

Ukraine has been trying to fend off the Russian invasion for 14 months and is heavily dependent on the support of Western allies for its military equipment. On Friday, about 50 countries, including Belgium, met in Ramstein to discuss this aid. Latvia, which borders Russia and Belarus, is one of Ukraine’s strongest allies.
