Laszlo Papp, communist Hungary and the title that never arrived

Communist Hungary forced its three-time Olympian boxing ace (from 1948 to 1956) to turn professional only at the age of 35. Laszlo managed to take the continental title and was all ready to challenge the world champion Giardiello. But then an order arrived from Budapest…

Every time the history of the twentieth century encounters sport, the latter emerges conditioned, if not even defeated in its values, with the upheaval of many, too many individual destinies. Imagine, then, when politics gets involved. Two worlds that, at a distance, collide, it is impossible for them to meet in order to face each other: it could be, as well as a Cold War joke, also the synthesis of the historical background behind László Papp, the fist of Budapest (as we call him in these lines, ed.), the Hungarian national hero born in the capital on 25 March 1926.
